Estrela da Favela

Estrela da Favela is a relatively young and small organisation, with both Dutch and Brazilian roots. Its aim is to improve the future prospects for its students, all of whom come from difficult backgrounds. Estrela da Favela aims to achieve this through both education and sporting activities.

Busy teaching and learning at Estrela da Favela

The school, located in the outskirts of the Mangueira favela near the world famous Maracanã football stadium, caters for 110 boys and girls, in the age range 4 to 14. The ultimate focus of the school and its activities is to guide particularly the young girls into a productive and independent adulthood in an environment where presently many become teen mothers and involved with drug gangs, or in prostitution. However, they also pay a lot of attention to the boys, who have to become aware that their role in the very macho favela culture has to change.
